That Feeling When Your Dream Nursery Is All Done

You know that minimalist look that's all over Instagram, and in gorgeous baby classrooms?  We love it!

We absolutely wanted a Montessori/Waldorf approach to our baby's room. It was a priority for us.

We love the welcoming environment it creates for calm, independent, open-ended play.

We live in an apartment, so moving our baby into her own room required some rearranging! We cleared out a small family room—taking out a loveseat, bookshelves, and table—to make a beautiful, open space.

After so many hours, (and a bit of childproofing!) it was complete!

It has just

  • a crib
  • a low toy shelf for a toy rotation
  • a thick rug
  • a cozy chair
  • framed artwork
  • plants

That's it!

While not "perfectly" Montessori, the room felt like our nursery dream come true.

But... we didn't realize that our Montessori-style optimization caused one serious problem:

It was LOUD.

A Little Background... Our (Surprise!) Crash Course in Language Acquisition

A little bit of background: Our parenting journey has... thrown us some curve balls. In April 2021, our 1-day old baby girl failed her newborn hearing screening. Soon after, she was diagnosed with severe hearing loss.

As the parents of a deaf baby learning spoken language through hearing aids, we got a crash course in optimizing language acquisition.

We did a deep dive on our baby's speech development, both receptive (listening and understanding) and expressive (making speech sounds). And we've learned so much! Did you know 4-month old babies can do speech therapy?

Our team of speech language professionals explained that rooms like Montessori classrooms, or minimalist nurseries, can actually work against language acquisition in one crucial way.

95% of what we've learned is probably specific to deaf babies. But one thing really jumped out at us. How could this not be common knowledge?  It seems like something everyone could benefit from! Our team of speech language professionals explained that rooms like Montessori classrooms, or minimalist nurseries, can actually work against language acquisition in one crucial way.

Color us completely shocked!

Can You Guess Our #1 Baby Room MISTAKE?

Thanks to our excellent Speech Language Pathologists, we noticed sounds in the baby's room were... different.

When we'd talk in the rest of the (cluttered) apartment, everything sounded great!

But, in her new "perfectly de-cluttered" nursery, the sound waves were actually bouncing all around.

The effect?  Our voices sounded tinny and muddled. Consonants and vowels just weren't as clear.

We honestly would not have noticed if our team of professionals had not flagged the potential issue. My husband and I could understand each other just fine, but our adult brains are fully wired for language. But, a baby's language acquisition is totally different!

The last thing we wanted for the room was to

  • make it shrill and annoying
  • make noisy toys louder
  • make it harder for our baby's brain to decipher language

But, by de-cluttering the room, we had unintentionally done just that! Did other parents realize this?  It seems like something they'd want to know!

The Fix: Gotta Soak Up The Sound!

We refused to sacrifice the benefits of a Montessori/Waldorf-style room.

So, we got to work and developed our own child-friendly solution!

It had to be

  • effective
  • safe
  • affordable
  • fit the feel of our room (in other words, super cute!)

After a lot of trial, error, tears and laughter, we are delighted to introduce our very own acoustic panels!

Acoustic wall panels decorated with rabbits, hanging on a wall in a Montessori-style nursery for a hard of hearing child

These panels feature technology used by the corporate world, and designed for home music centers. They're made from recycled materials designed to optimize sound absorption.

We customized them to make them cute!  Each one features our own design.

Designed to complement and enhance minimalist nurseries, bedrooms, and classrooms, these wall panels can make a world of difference.

The Result? SHHHHH... Can You Hear It?

We were skeptical at first. How could something so simple make any difference?  Would this be a waste of time, money, and effort?

We held our breath as we set them up.

And then—WOW!—the sound quality in the room was so much better.

We were back to wanting to be in her room, and wanting to sing and talk. The room felt peaceful again, and most importantly, would help our baby more easily learn language.

While you can find tons of inspo out there on colors, furniture, toys, and activities for minimalist parents, we've noticed it's sort of... silent... about sound quality!  Let's change that!
